INFORMATION
South Sudan’s accession to the Convention on Cluster Munitions is an important occasion for celebration and reflection: it is an important achievement but also a new starting point. Through their commitment and political will, the State of South Sudan and its international partners have made the Convention flourish, paving the way towards effective national implementation to ban these indiscriminate weapons and address their various harmful effects on people and communities. All of these efforts should be supported by continuing with the development of sustainable national capacity, guaranteeing the effectiveness of the Convention and the safety of the people affected by contamination. Joining the Convention means holding a clear stance against indiscriminate weapons, as well as unlocking humanitarian capabilities that address current and future challenges in a sustainable way. Addressing cluster munition contamination minimises the risks faced by returnees, allows the release of land for settlement and agricultural activities, and contribute to the development of food security. Through the perspectives of South Sudan’s authorities, their international partners, and international operators, this side event will explore how the accession and the further development of sustainable national capacity address cluster munition contamination and guarantee a safer and more prosperous present and future for people and communities.
